Early Elementary Tours(Early Elementary)

In the Children’s Village, special exhibits spark the imagination of 5 to 9 year-olds and provide a world of learning opportunities about math, science, economics, literature, art appreciation and much more.

School groups are greeted by a museum teacher who accompanies them through the Gatehouse entrance and gives a brief introduction to the Children’s Village. Each one hour and 30 minute tour includes an exclusive exploration of the exhibit space and concludes with an educational program. Support materials that reinforce the concepts introduced in the tour are available online. Favorite Children’s Village exhibits include the Super Service Center, Village Restaurant, Market and Walker Fishing Pond.

New Traveling Exhibits

Curious George™: Let’s Get Curious!
Children are invited to hang out in George’s neighborhood and tag along on his adventures as they operate wheels to help George clean the windows of an apartment building, climb a fire escape, sort and weigh fruits and vegetables at a produce stand, use science skills to putt a hole in mini golf, climb the rocket from George’s space adventure, build a whirligig at the farm, use conveyers and levers at a construction site and visit the museum within the museum. Groups visiting on a Children's Village field trip between September 26, 2009 and January 24, 2010 may experience this exhibit following their regular tour.

Educational programming for Curious George™: Let’s Get Curious! is made possible by generous grants from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation, the Jordan Charitable Foundation and the Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis. A limited number of qualifying field trip groups will experience this exhibit free of charge.

NEW! Small Change, Big Money
The Magic House is on the money with this new program about U.S. coins for Kindergarten and first-grade students. The program begins in the Children’s Village, where students role play earning and saving activities in a kid-sized community. Children then participate in a coin hunt relay game and decide how to wisely spend their new-found fortune. Count on a fun and engaging financial education experience!

Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees
This economic education program helps students make connections between everyday living and finances. Students earn paychecks, make consumer choices, use teamwork in their job sites and learn how members of a community depend upon each other. They also form a “family” and make financial decisions about their wants and needs. Attendance at a FREE teacher workshop is a prerequisite for teachers new to the program. See the Staff Development page for details of the workshop.

Community Workers
Students explore the concept of a community as they take on the roles of bankers, TV reporters, construction workers, librarians and other community members. After students visit the Children’s Village, museum educators will guide them in creating a model community of their own, determining what roles and institutions are necessary for it to function. They will also sharpen their map skills while learning how members of a community depend upon each other. This program complements the elementary social studies curriculum and encourages children to envision ways to improve their own communities.
